Strahan

Strahan is a small port on the Southwest side of Tasmania where you can take a day cruise through Hell’s Gate to Macquarie Bay. These treacherous waters were the path to Tasmania’s original prison -.Sarah’s island. Event though the waters of the bay are generally calm and show reflections of the green forests an prisoner trying to escape would need to cover the entire untracked width of Tasmania to reach any civilization. Later the prisoners became world renown for building ships using the native Huon Pine. The Huon pine contains a strong euclypticus resin that causes the logs to resist rot enabling the ships to last longer. They cut all the slow growing pines and now further cutting has been prohibited in hopes they can rebuild the forest.

A forest so old, that the tree species date from before the advent of birds. The forest is quiet and still because the trees don't offer enough nutrients for normal number of birds to survive.
